New Years Resolutions and Foodlink....

Above is my lovely friend, Calia, who has been helpful in planting our community garden with trees....We now have conifers, oak, and fruit trees as the introduction plants to our collective efforts to create a local foodweb.
On another note....
Foodlink and Farmers Market....the perfect match for those unable to attend the lovely farmers market. Some times people may be too busy, or otherwise unable to get there....No worries!

People's Foodlink will deliver high quality local, seasonal fruit and veggies to your door the evening of the farmers market. That is, give me a call (760 765 2548) and I will deliver food to your door as a way to make the farmers more money and to steep all of us deeper into the value of local foods. If you want the eggs, bread and nuts produced locally to accompany your boxes, I can do that too! The more people rewarded for their valuable contributions to our collective health, the better. On this New Years Eve I vow to make our community healthier, lovelier, and more connected next year!

incubating....

Incubating on both the inner and outer realms....by gathering manure for our community garden compost and by meditating on the shortest day of the year, December 21st-Winter Solstice.
This is a good time to regenerate both soils for the beauty that will come in the Spring. Our Orchard lane gardens will be planted with orchard trees next week: plum, nectarine, pear, apples, cherry and peach. May the tree goddess be with us!

Rain, trees and Farmers Market

Today is Monday the 7th of December and I believe we will get a couple inches out of this storm!
First real rain of the season...At the community garden we just planted our cover crops, so I am sure they are getting a soaking. Next week we will be planting trees....
At the Farmers Market this week I bought most of my food for the week including brocolli, greens, lettuce (Davida's Garden mix!), several kinds of bread, nuts, chips and salsa....apples, oranges and chutney- all made within 50 miles.
Happiness is Local Food.......

APPLES AND PEACHES

THE APPLES THAT WIN MY ADMIRATION THIS YEAR ARE THE ORGANIC HONEY CRISP FROM BAILEY CREEK RANCH AND THE ARKANSAS RED FROM DOWN THE ROAD IN WYNOLA, SOLD BY ALBERT LEWIS.
HOW DO I LOVE THESE?
HONEY CRISP BY ITS WELL NAMED FLAVOR AND TEXTURE....ARKANSAS RED FOR ITS PUNGENT APPLENESS. IT REMINDS OF APPLES OF OLD....BEFORE WE HUMANS STARTED MESSING AROUND WITH THE HYBRIDS.
TO YOUR RIGHT YOU SEE THE FRUITS OF MY LABOR THIS FALL....I PUT UP PEACHES INTO JARS FOR WINTER GOODNESS SAKE....TO SERVE OVER ICE CREAM, PANCAKES OR JUST AS IS. I WAS ABLE TO PERFORM THIS MIRACLE BY TAKING A CANNING WORKSHOP WITH CHEF SUSAN AT CAMP STEVENS. THIS WIZ KID OF THE KITCHEN WHIPPED UP A LUSCIOUS SYRUP OF PEPPERCORNS, LAUREL AND LAVENDER FOR A SEMI SWEET SYRUP. THE PEACHES WERE COMPLIMENTS OF AN ABUNDANCE AT BAILEY CREEK RANCH WHERE I HELPED OUT A BIT SORTING PEAR, PEACH AND APPLES THIS AUTUMN.
ENJOY THE FRUITS OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD FARMERS MARKET, IF NOT YOUR OWN BACKYARD THIS NEXT YEAR. MAKE A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO DO SO!

LOCAVORE PEARS WITH CHARACTER

THESE LOVELY CHARACTERS WERE CHOSEN FOR THEIR PERSONALITY. THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF LOCAL PEARS IN JULIAN FROM TRADITIONAL BARTLETT'S TO BOSQUE TO THE CADILLAC OF PEARS. THE U-PICK SITES IN JULIAN ARE MANY DURING THE FALL SEASON. AND THE VARIETY IS ASTOUNDING.
I HAD THE UNIQUE EXPERIENCE THIS YEAR TO TASTE CRISPY SWEET AS WELL AS CREAMY JUICY VARIETIES. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE EXPERIENCE NEXT SEASON!

Locavores unite!

Hello from the rural town of Julian in the San Diego mountains of California.
Today the winds are high and dry as we enter the winter.....
My lovely friend Mary is here visiting from Frezno and has helped me to get this locavore blogspot happening! Muchas gracias Maria!
At this November's end, we have a new fullswing Farmers Market which is the place where I will go to buy most of my weeks groceries.....eggs, bread, fruits, vegetables, honey....
all created within a 50 mile radius!
The foundation for a healthy diet is right within your reach if you venture out to your local farmers market....and all is organic for me, and probably could be for you as well.
Viva los Locavores!
